In early November, TMA Global Chairman Ron Sussman and I spent 10 days in Asia meeting with some of TMA’s newest members, as well as what we hope were many future members.

Our first stop was Korea, where we had been invited by the Korean Small and Medium Business Administration (SMBA) to address a conference during Entrepreneurship Week 2013. The Korean government is committed to supporting small and medium-size businesses and is particularly interested in the principles of turnaround as it relates to existing enterprises. While TMA does not currently have a chapter in Korea, there is much interest, and we will continue to explore how best to enter this important market in the future.

From Korea, Ron and I traveled to Hong Kong and enjoyed a great evening with the members of one of our newest chapters, the TMA Hong Kong Chapter. Hong Kong serves as an entry point to China, and many members shared examples of the work they are doing there. Finally, we headed to Singapore for the Asia Pacific Chapter Presidents meeting and the formal launch event of the TMA Singapore Chapter. Singapore, like Hong Kong, serves as a regional base, and members there indicated that they are engaged in projects throughout the region.

With the formal chartering of the TMA Singapore Chapter, TMA’s global network now stands at 48 chapters with nearly 9,000 members. This is an unequaled network of turnaround, restructuring, and corporate renewal professionals and provides TMA members with opportunities to connect across the globe. I urge you to use the online membership directory at turnaround.org to search for and connect with members around the world, whether you need a local resource or a piece of business intelligence.

The TMA chapter network also provides you with an instant group of colleagues as you travel. Members are welcome and encouraged to attend events outside their home chapters. With about 400 chapter events held each year, it’s a perfect way to grow your professional network. The TMA Global events calendar at turnaround.org is another great resource, and I encourage you to use it as you plan your next business trip.

This year marks TMA’s 25th anniversary and, as the year draws to a close, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge and thank the TMA Founders, many of whom joined us to celebrate at The Annual in Washington, D.C., in October. What a remarkable opportunity to hear firsthand stories from TMA’s early days and also hear the founders’ perspectives on how the industry has evolved over the years. TMA today owes so much to this dedicated group of volunteers, and I take maintaining and building upon their legacy very seriously.

I would also like to thank the 2013 TMA leadership and volunteers at the global and chapter levels for their support and service. Without the thousands of hours of volunteer time contributed by our members, TMA would be a shadow of its former self rather than the global force it has become.

The end of 2013 also marks my two-year anniversary as TMA Global CEO. What TMA members do is vitally important to health of the global economy, and I am honored to serve and represent them. It’s been an amazing two years for me, as well as an incredible 25 years for TMA, and I am ready and excited for the next 25! One of my favorite sayings is “Onward and upward!” Nothing sums up my feelings about TMA’s future better.

I wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season!

Cheers,

Gregory J. Fine, CAE
TMA Global CEO
